An Explanation of CD Stud Welding

Capacitor discharge (CD) stud welding is generally used to weld smaller studs and pins to thin work metals. A modern CD stud welder can also create a weld without leaving burn through marks. The weld time is typically shorter than it is with arc stud welding, meaning there is no need for heat concentration via a flux such as a ceramic ferrule.

First, the fastener is loaded into the chuck and placed against the work piece. Upon triggering, a direct-current arc is initiated and is discharged through the fastener, melting the entire surface of base and the respective area of the work piece. A spring then pushes the fastener into the molten metal. The metal then solidifies, leaving a high-fusion weld.
